Armed To The Teeth: The Gun Show
Well the gun show rush has come and gone. Hours were spent darting excitedly from table to table, trying to take in all of the glorious 810 displays. Exhausting marches equal to that of campaigning soldiers took place between rows and rows of gear. You can see the photographs at the bottom of this post.
The lineups were huge, stretching back and forth on the ramps of the Round-Up Centre. The male to female ratio was 15 to 1 and forty percent of the crowd had baseball caps. Jeans were standard issue.
Tables and vendors in the hundreds means that you never see everything, but you usually find a way to see the coolest stuff. For every booth devoted to a collection of nearly identical rifle bullets from 1895 there is one showing a fully functioning mortar.
I can really only distill the highlights down for you here. Things like the world’s largest animal trap, as wide as I am tall and never sprung. The thing looks like its made to catch dragons. Sam Steele’s Riders, dressed in full cowboy gear minus the horses. In summer they go riding through the mountains with revolvers and lever-action rifles. Cory Colver and his one sixth scale meticulously detailed army of German soldiers. He custom makes them to reflect the utmost in realism, and has been making them for the past nine years. The Irishman from SaskSten who has been machining his own clones of the classic WWII Sten sub-machine gun. He’s recreated every generation of the weapon, even the rare New Zealand model. Or, possibly my second favorite purchase of the show, the tactical innovations guys who were selling paper zombie targets. That’s right, you can shoot zombies in the firing range with live ammo.
You may recall last week I had a goal for this show. Sure enough, I laid down my cash for a 1911 clone. Now of course the process of purchasing isn’t quite so direct. I’ve paid my money but don’t get my hands on the pistol until next Thursday. Despite having a license, and a membership, and being in a room full of guns, I only got to hold my gun at the vendors table, then had to put it back behind glass.
A lot of my geeky but not so hard core friends ask me “does that mean you can just walk home with that?” If only it was that easy. But it’s probably good that it isn’t.
This is Canada, and we are fairly secure with our firearms. Every gun in Canada falls into one of three classifications. Non-restricted firearms: your grandpa’s side by side shotgun or a deer-hunting rifle would fit these. They’re long, they shoot one bullet at a time, and they only hold a few rounds. Restricted applies primarily to pistols, but also anything with a short barrel. Then there’s the prohibited. One of the cool things about the gun show is you get to look at prohibited guns. These are the tiny derringers and purse canons that are so popular with spies, hoods, and anyone looking to own a “cute” gun. No one can buy prohibited guns anymore. No new licenses are being issued, unless possibly to military or security officials.
If you’re licensed, you can take a long gun like your rifle home with you when you leave. Just carry it out. But even if you’re licensed you’ll wait for that handgun. A transfer has to be initiated with a firearms control office in Edmonton. They don’t want just anybody walking away with any old concealable weapon, so they check first that you are who you say you are.
Fair enough. But in a room overflowing with weaponry I really just want to take it all home with me. I got what I came for though: a damn good time, and a new purchase. By next week I’ll have taken it out to the range. Until then though, I look back fondly on a hall so full of guns you could have raised an army right then and there.
