The Fallout Fan Film: Desert Story
If you’re a fan of Fallout, or any sort of post-apocalyptic story, one would hope you’ve seen Desert Story, a short flick thrown up on you-tube. Its about the end of the world, imprisoned hookers, and how much you get get for some potatoes. If not, give it a watch. I reccomend the high res version:
We spoke with the writer, director, and veteran of the wasteland Tim Pape about his creation and whats next for the Stranger. Pape took the Fallout universe, specifically the mid-west wasteland of the first two games, and used them as the setting for Desert Story.
The story was a collaboration between Pape and his brother Phil. The two had previously finished a week long Fallout 3 marathon. They planted in front of their TV and played from the opening moments of Vault 101, to the dark finale at the Water Purifier.
Desert Story doesn’t take the kill-everyone-and-loot-their-corpses play method I used but its in the right vein. Pape finds the feel of the post-apocalyptic desert more appealing than trying to recreate individual game mechanics on screen. Plus a $2500 budget doesn’t leave much room for exploding mutant heads. “Making a video for the internet pretty much eliminates the issue of censorship.” Pape said when asked about violent content in film compared to games, “The point blank execution of Ma. . . that probably wouldn’t fly on any network station.”
The episode is part of a larger series, eventually seeing a feature film released in the same universe with different characters. The feature, which is partially funded all ready, will tell the story of a bonny and clyde style couple who murder, loot, and rob their way across the wasteland. It’ll be called Black Velvet and starts filming this September.
But there’ll be a continuation of Desert Story before then.
“I didn’t want to lose the momentum” said Pape, “so we’re shooting two more episodes this month. We’ll probably release them for June and July to space things out.” The two follow-ups to Desert Story, both slightly shorter, bring a cinematic edge to some regular gameplay moments. One is about selling your shit once you’ve looted and pillaged, and the other is about what exactly happens when you order an avatar to rest.
“The second one will see our main character meeting and negotiating with a supplies trader that he meets on the side of the road,” Pape said, “It always seemed slightly ridiculous to me, that whenever you really need supplies there’s some random trader who oh so conveniently has what you need.” The other short is a little less action oriented, built around the campfire of the whiskey drinking, nameless hero who has been forced to rest. Pape brought up a good point, that sleep always feels tacked on in these games (RPGs in general not just Fallout). Maybe you just butchered a horde of mutants, ran five kilometers with a mini-gun strapped to your back, and have recently taken all manner of drugs. But the moment you push sleep in a safe zone the dude just passes right out. The third Desert Story short is taking a more realistic look at that, because not all ten hours of that rest period can be spent sleeping.
End of the World stories have always appealed to Pape. He’s read the Road, knows Mad Max, and is always keeping abreast of new releases like the Book of Eli.
“People read the bible and think Revelations is about the end of time,” he says “But really its about the end of Rome and the empire. We all tell those stories. It resonates with people.” The Fallout games are actually one of the most light-hearted takes on the apocalypse. Games like Stalker and Metro 2033, and movies like The Road and Children of Men offer a much bleaker vision of the future. Tim Pape summed up the genre perfectly in my mind, saying:
“In that sort of environment you really see what you’re made of. When there is no one to judge or reprimand you, would you still do the right thing?”

I’m going to go ahead and stop you right there. Fallout 3, while one of my favorite moments of video gaming, really has very little to do with the “Fallout world”. In fact, I respect Bethesda for that. They went out of their way to distance their entry into the franchise from the setting that was created by Black Isle in the original two games. The Enclave is led by the successor to Dick Richardson and largely separate from the earlier entity we saw, the faction of the Brotherhood of Steel we meet in F3 is isolated from the rest of the organization over ideological differences (and in fact we see a throwback to the original sect in the Outcasts) which marks very clearly that this is not your granddaddy’s post-apocalyptic wasteland.
The DLC, in fact, is a VAST departure from previous Fallout. Virtual reality simulations with the safeties turned off? A Brotherhood Paladin turned monarch of a mutant-infested pocket of urban civilization? A giant disembodied brain and a zombie locked in a power-struggle in a Lovecraftian voodoo swamp? Motherfucking ALIENS for Christ’s sake. Don’t take this the wrong way, but the DLCs for Fallout 3 were batshit insane. Yes, that’s why they were fun, but I don’t think it offers any insight as to the history of the world.
If someone had’ve bothered to design Fallout 3 around the west-coast and desert wasteland from the original setting, and then released DLC with the same concepts as the ones we saw for Bethesda’s game, I would have quite literally shit a brick right through somebody’s window. The only way Bethesda managed to not only draw my ire but actually EXCITE me about a game was by making it distinctly isolated from the existing setting. Don’t get me wrong, Fallout canon contradicts itself here and there, but Chris Avellone has done a surprisingly good job of keeping things straight in the Fallout Bible.
Nothing irritates me more than people who play Fallout 3 and then take it as the word of God handed down on radioactive stone tablets, because this is very decidedly not your granddaddy’s post-apocalyptic wasteland.
How does Mothership Zeta fit into things? I remember seeing that released and making my “abuh?” face at the concept of space aliens.
