Square Enix just announced September 30 as the official release date for Final Fantasy XIV, priced at $49.99 (U.S.).
They also revealed a cool looking collectors edition which actually has a release date set for September 22 at $74.99, eight days before the regular edition comes out.
What does this mean? Gamers that pick up the collectors edition can start playing eight days before everyone else.
It sounds cool on paper, and will definately entice some gamers into picking it up, but don’t forget, most MMOs are plagued with problems during the first week or two. And, for those first eight days, there’s a little warning that access is limited to server capacity. So, all my fall down when everything goes live on the 30th as well.
But, as with anything, we’ll just have to wait and see.
The Collectors Edition also comes with an in-game item (The Onion Helm), a behind-the-scenes DVD, a security token (for use with your password), a travel journal (art book), a token for a right of passage (some sort of certificate) and cover art by Yoshitaka Amano, if that means anything to you.
Both editions get 30 Days of gameplay free.
Then you start paying, and that’s where things get tricky.
Per month, it will cost you $12.99 U.S. That includes one player character, and one retainer (which is an NPC used to carry around your extra items and junk).
However, each new character you want to add to your account, will cost you an additional $3.00 per 30 day period. Each retainer will cost you $1.00
You can have up to eight characters on your account. So, for a full eight characters and retainers, that will be roughly $41 a month. Pretty hefty.
It seems pretty harsh, having to pay extra just to create a new character, when I can just jump on any other MMO and create, create, create! without having to pay a dime extra.
