Automotive Saturday: William’s Stunning Red Acura NSX

Name: William Mah
Location: Calgary
Car Type: 1991 Acura NSX

Why did you choose an NSX?
The NSX had a certain level of exoticness matched with reliability, that combonation really appealed to me. To me Acura got it right the first time. The cars body design, handling, reliability, and comfort is simply amazing. The true testament of this forward thinking process is evident even to this day. At least once a week, someone will stop me somewhere and talk about the car. First people have a hard time believing it’s a 1991, then they don’t believe it’s an Acura.

How long did it take for you to complete modifying the car to a certain level of satisfaction?
3 years.

What sort of future modifications (if any) are you planning?
None planned at this time.

What do you do job wise?
I primarily work for an Oil/Gas company, but own numerous other businesses ranging from construction to property management.

What are your thoughts on the Calgary car scene?
I’ve been out of it for a while now (married with 2 kids) but the scene is very vibrant and diverse from what I see. When I was growing up in the late ’80s, Friday and Saturday nights would be typical nights for car junkies to hang out at the parking lot across from the Bay Parkade downtown (or as we use to call this bullsh*t corner). It was predominantly American muscle and back then to have a modified import was very rare and I only remember a few and we were frowned upon.

Fast forward to today everything has changed.  Imports play a huge role in the car scene (along with American muscle), the modifications and level of knowledge that the typical owner has now is amazing. Car events seem to have transcended the “boundaries” that use to exist before, and now, regardless of what you drive, it’s just car guys getting together because they love cars and they want to share this enthusiasm with others. I think a large part of this is due to great car forum sites like Beyond.ca, nsxprime.com, G35driver.com, E46fanatics.com that really reach out and to the car enthusiast and allow everyone to share knowledge and an overall love for cars.

What shops do you take your car to here in Calgary?
I only take my car to two shops that I trust. One is Option Import (Jim we miss you!) who specialize in NSX’s, the other is Compact Tuning Labs who did the entire engine rework.  Both these shops are amazing to work with, their sheer knowledge of mechanics and customization is nothing short of impressive, very customer service focused, great attention to detail and all around genuinely nice guys who do it for the love of cars.
