Top Zombie Guns
Some people design a gun to hunt moose with, some people design a gun to defend their basement with. And some people design a gun for when Shit Hits The Fan and we are swallowed into the zombie horde.
This is actually becoming more and more popular. Guns are generally constructed around some overarching concept of what you want the firearm for. My scout rifle for example. The theory of an eventual undead apocalypse isn’t a usual one, but there’s no reason not to if you have the will and the funds.
I haven’t built a zombie gun yet. I think I have some that would do just fine, and am currently more interested in constructing guns I can actually use. But some other people are far more creative than me, and have much bigger budgets. So I’m pleased to present a choice selection of the finest in corpse-murdering hardware the internet has to offer:
Outdoor Life ran a contest to see who could design a fantastic zombie gun. They seem to have only gotten a few entries, but this one is just balls out crazy. The modified AR-15 by Lauer Custom Weaponry shoots arrows. That’s right, arrows. It also shoots bullets when you need it to. The entire affair runs at almost $2000, but the idea of a semi-silent arrow being fired by a blank .22 round is just too cool. The blood-spatter paint job is a bit much for me though. Maybe the Modern Warfare crowd will appreciate the extra skin.
Now this next one falls into my preffered sort of zombie weapon. That of a reliable, get the job done sort of shotgun. Read the first issue, read any of my posts. Shotguns just work. Every time you need them, they will solve whatever is right in front and scaring you. This guy has created something similar to what I’d like my own to be. With a few extras, but not kitted out in a way that is overboard.
From another forum thread I dug up a nice looking AR-15 rifle. These things are more and more popular everyday. And why not? They’re good enough for the army. They should do the job in a zombie apocalypse. This one has a gorgeous rail set and combination of iron and holographic sights. Notice that it does not have massive breast like beta-C mags, or a laser designator, or a bayonet. Instead it is changed to suit a particular need, and that is it. Controlled modification means you stick to your purpose. Plus that robot is kind of awesome.
Now this last one is very well known. The zombie emergency kit crawled its away across the internet ages ago. But if you haven’t seen it you should. And if you have seen it, I have some mild critiques. The idea is simple: make a kit that hangs on the wall in your living room, and if zombies show up, use it. The kit has a shorty shotgun, some ammo, and a machete for when things get up close and personal. The crowning achievement is that the glass of the frame is actually a miniature riot shield that can be worn as protection from the undead.
This guy got famous with this thing. It’s clever, its stylish and it looks bad ass. But there are some flaws. That shorty shotgun is pretty neat, but its a pump action. And that awesome riot shield is supposed to cover your entire left arm. How are you supposed to use the rest of those shells when you can’t pump your gun to feed more ammo in?
That and the shotgun itself is a pistol grip. I understand that short barrels and compact shotguns look cool, and are great for heists. But from a practical perspective they will fuck up your wrist if you’re firing serious loads. Slugs and 000 buck can hurt even with a good compression stock on there. But if you have to fire your tiny shotgun one-handed its going to get real painful real fast.
I have read that putting a muzzle brake on your shotgun can make that pistol grip more reasonable. In fact you can buy a shotgun called “the roadblocker” with a massive muzzle-brake similar to a Barret fifty-cal. The muzzle brake directs gas and recoil to the side and back instead of into your shoulder. That means you had better have hearing protection, as the venting of gas makes it sound like you’re on the receiving end of the gun. Its available here in Calgary for just over $400, and would in theory make a pistol grip shotgun into a manageable, if extremely loud firearm.
