Batman. Of all the costumed heroes to grace the comics page, the Dark Knight of Gotham City could be argued as the most popular. He’s been brooding, he’s been silly, he’s fought everything from vampires to insane clowns to aliens yet no matter how outlandish the tale the character and his concept remains one of the most durable in comics, to say nothing of the most malleable. There’s something to be said for taking a character you’ve come to know and to tweak his setting, his origin, or his purpose a little bit off-centre, to see what would result. DC Comics had been doing ‘Imaginary Stories’ for years, but in the wake of 1985’s Crisis on Infinite Earths such stories had been on the wane. Superhero comics were Serious Business, and to even contemplate a return to those more fanciful tales you’d have to have one helluva pitch. I have to imagine writer Brian Augustyn delivered with a single, one-sentence premise: ‘Batman vs. Jack the Ripper.’
Gotham By Gaslight opens in Vienna in 1889. Bruce Wayne has completed his cross-country sojourn through Europe, learning from such pillars of the intellectual community as Sigmund Freud. He returns to Gotham City a man with a purpose, a man with a mission, and a man who aims to see the growing corruption in his city completely stymied. But this Dark Knight-to-be isn’t the only person who’s made the transatlantic journey. Soon a rash of killings break out in the city’s seedier areas, murders that seem all too similar to a series of murders committed in the Whitechapel district of London. Saucy Jack has come calling, and with the Gotham Police and Inspector James Gordon baffled, can the cloaked crusader find the answers before he himself is implicated for his inability to explain his nightly whereabouts?
I first encountered Gotham By Gaslight when I was thirteen, about four months before the Tim Burton film brought the Dark Knight back to popular zeitgeist with his dark and brooding interpretation. Returning to the book for the purposes of this review I confess to a certain amount of trepidation; it can sometimes be unpleasant to return to something you loved as a kid, your adult sensibilities tearing apart what you once thought to be amazing. What struck me upon re-reading the volume was just how much Brian Augustyn, Mike Mignola (long before his Hellboy renaissance), and P. Craig Russel had accomplished with this reinterpretation of the Batman mythos. Not only did Gotham By Gaslight succeed in creating a taut, exciting read that drew in my thirteen year-old self, it created a world my thirty-four year old sensibilities found engaging as hell, with touches and little asides that kept the pages flipping at an increasing rate of speed.
One of the most intriguing things about the story lies in just how well Batman works as a Victorian adventurer. True, there’s no Batmobile, Bat-computer, or even batarangs(this Batman uses throwing knives, and does not mess around in their use), and his ‘cape’ is more a modified inverness cloak in the style of Sherlock Holmes (who gets a mention at the beginning of the story as one of Bruce Wayne’s teachers), but for all that the character works, and the notion of ‘criminals being a superstitious and cowardly lot’ seems that much more effective in an age before electric lights and cell phones. A whole world is crafted within the span of forty-eight pages, and it’s one in which I’d have liked to linger. Mignola’s pen is masterful here and he creates a Victorian Gotham that lives and breathes and is visually distinct, yet is intricate and gothic enough to act as a forerunner to Burton’s vision. I love Augustyn’s prose which serves to make each character distinct and memorable, and whose epistolary writings for Bruce Wayne’s journal entries conjure up shades of Stoker’s Dracula.
Gotham By Gaslight was an experiment of sorts, an effort to determine if ‘what-if’ style stories would wo
rk in the direct market. Its success spawned an entire line of alternate-reality stories under the Elseworlds imprint, starting with the story’s sequel Master Of The Future. Here we rejoin Bruce Wayne a few years later, having put aside his cloak and cowl and readying himself for a life without the ‘Bat-Man’ and a life with his beautiful young fiancee, Julie Madison (a nice shout-out to the Golden Age Batman’s original fiancee of the same name). All too soon he finds himself drawn back to the role of Gotham’s protector as a mad genius named Alexander LeRoi lays siege to the city, determined to destroy its American Discovery Exhibition and what he sees as the polluted, befouled world of the twentieth century. With time running out and a madman who can harness the very light of day as a weapon, can the Batman of the past defeat the man of tomorrow?
Master Of The Future is definitely a different animal than Gotham By Gaslight. Whereas Gaslight focused mainly on Gothic Horror in the Stoker tradition, Future seems more Jules Verne Science Fiction. The transition from one tone to the other can be a bit jarring, and as a result I think the sequel suffers slightly for it. Which isn’t to say the story isn’t entertaining; Augustyn gives his Bruce Wayne a much more thoughtful demeanour, considering his purpose in life in the wake of the previous story’s revelations, and the pencils of artist Eduardo Barreto are breathtaking, particularly in the sequence where Bruce embraces his destiny. The story is much more swashbuckling than the previous work, and while fun one does wish for a bit of a smoother transition between stories.
Originally released as two prestige-format volumes in 1989 and 1991 respectively, DC recently collected the two volumes under the single title of BATMAN: GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT. If you’re in the mood for a pair of enjoyable Batman stories that are self-contained and are equal parts taut thriller and thrilling adventure tale, I heartily recommend these two stories.
