The sidekick. Sidekicks have made their way into every form of media. They’re usually a nice balance to a serious, moody hero. They balance out the equation, offer comic relief and support the hero in his or her hour of need.
Sidekicks can be friends, siblings, older, younger – you name it. But they have to be something more. They have to be there at all times to support the hero, so much that they become a central part to the character.
But there are tons of sidekicks out there. We don’t know them all, so it’s impossible to put together a ranking. So I present to you, in no specific order, Wild Gunmen’s 10 favourite sidekicks.
Almost as crazy as the Joker, it’s hard to believe Harley Quinn has only been around since the 90s. A creation of the animated Batman series, Harley become hugely popular and has now been added to the comic book continuity as well.
A faithful sidekick and love interest to her Mr. J, her puddin’, Harley compliments the Joker’s sinister but crazy tone perfectly.
He speaks only in meeps and he’s named after a piece of lab equipment, but he’s become a fan-favourite. Often finding himself in hazardous (but humourous) situations thanks to the good Doctor Bunsen Honeydew, he’s always blowing up, catching on fire and frantically panicking. He’s the comic foil to the Honeydew’s science-focused mind, and often the test subject in his experiments.
Chewie is a great sidekick. It’s all to often that sidekicks are kicked around and used to lighten the situation next to a dark hero, but Chewie is as serious and dedicated as they come. And it’s great meeting him for the first time and seeing the relationship between him and Han Solo – although he speaks in wails and moans, his partner Han understands him perfectly.
Donkey Kongs pint-sized companion, Diddy Kong has become almost as recognizable as the big ape. He’s even gone on solo adventures to rescue his best friend from the clutches of K. Rool, and starred in a fondly remembered kart racing game.
Plus, the outfit is awesome.
Sonic & Tails, players had a blast connecting a second controller and playing as Tails in Sonic 2. Although, unless you were playing versus, the camera was centered on Sonic, making it a pain if you weren’t going at the same speed.
But the two-tailed fox has lasted as long as Sonic has and is instantly recognizable next to the blue blur.
Pinky and The Brain – One is a genius, the other’s insane!
Pinky isn’t the smarted of rodents, but when can you expect when he’s sidekicked next to the Brain? With his good heart, he often got in the way of Brain’s plans to take over the world, but like Brain, we forgive him. Narf!
Dedication to an extreme degree, loyal Smither would do anything Mr. Burns asked. It’s certainly an unbalanced pair, with Mr. Burns having all the power in the relationship and Smithers having to take it without question.
But there’s no resentment here – a true sidekick, Smithers would do anything for Mr. Burns.
Jimmy Olsen quickly became a sidekick to Superman. In earlier days, he even had a comic named Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen. He even gained powers and took up superhero identities in some of the wilder stories.
Although it’s not one of those sidekick relationships that gets attention outside of comics, or even inside of comics, there’s enough material out there to prove that these two really are best friends, and Jimmy Olsen has come to Supes aid a number of times. He just crosses over the line from good friend to sidekick.
Calvin’s stuffed tiger Hobbes is his best friend, and also the cause of a lot of contention. It’s funny that Hobbes always has the witty comebacks and “I told ya so” moments considering he’s a creating of Calvin’s imagination.
But they can’t stand to be apart.
When most people think sidekick, they think Robin. I know I said this list is un-numbered, but in any sidekick list, Robin makes an easy first place.
In the same line of work, but with the exact opposite personality of Batman, Robin balances out the Dark Knight.
And growing up, a fair share of kids don’t want to be Batman – they want to be Batmans pal. Which is probably why Robin has become such a staple of the Batman character. Even if you don’t want the shorts or the bright colour scheme – wouldn’t it be a blast to swing above Gotham, fighting crime side-by-side with the Batman?
