TMR: The New Elm Street And The Hack/Slash Premise

The remake/reimagining/reboot/re-whatever of A Nightmare on Elm Street was just released and it made me think of my past with horror movies and the comic series Hack/Slash.

I had wanted to see this remake while it as in theatres, but couldn’t get anyone else interested in joining me.  This was something I wasn’t completely surprised by, since it was A) a remake of something that didn’t need to be remade and B) a slasher flick.  Both of these factors tend to scare people off, because remakes are generally considered to be wastes of film and examples that Hollywood has run out of ideas and because slashers, while enjoying a nice resurgence in popularity in the ‘90s, are kind of played out at the moment.

I first started watching horror movies when I was nine, introduced mainly by the series’ Friday the 13th, Puppet Master, and A Nightmare on Elm Street. I found Nightmare to be one of the freakier series due to the weird nature of dreams normally.  That there was a character that could invade, control, and warp your dreams into something deadly freaked me out a bit.  Freddy Kreuger was pretty funny, though, so I was torn between terror and joy.  As the series went on, it got worse, but at the time, I couldn’t tell one from the other; they were all similar enough and I wasn’t yet smart enough to notice small things like, oh, the names of the main characters or, shit, the actors, even.  It was just a parade of bizarre murders, striped sweaters, and the hideously burned (faux) face of the character defining Robert Englund.  Robert Englund was, and is, an amazing gift to the world of horror.

As time went on, my love of horror movies started to get a little more well-defined.  As opposed to just enjoying whatever was playing in front of me, I got snooty and old-fashioned, and started being more entertained by monster movies.  I still enjoyed a slasher or two, but I had moved from Freddy, Jason, and Michael, to zombies, killer puppets, and things that should not be.  This might be seen as a retreat from the personal, with named adversaries, to the more impersonal, which featured nameless hordes and creatures.  Or maybe I just like monsters.  Whatever.

This would be a good time to mention the Hack/Slash comics.  In it, the attractive lead character, Cassie, and her disfigured friend Vlad hunt down and kill creatures that they call ‘revenants’ or ‘slashers’, as they are, in essence, the same sorts of beings as seen in slasher movies.  They can be the straightforward Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees types, lumbering ‘people’ using conventional weapons, or they can be more bizarre like Chucky or Kreuger, attacking people in dreams or just, you know, being a knife-wielding toy.  This series is going to be made into an animated movie, and there have been talks of making a live-action film as well since 2006.  This could mean it’s in a little bit of development hell, but who can say for sure.

The remake is filled with a number of young and attractive up and comers, whose names don’t ring any bells and whose credits aren’t yet very noteworthy, in my opinion.  The only exception to this would be the Englund replacement, Jackie Earle Haley.  This was a very well made decision, since Haley, like Englund, isn’t a big guy; one of the defining aspects of Kreuger in the world of the slasher was that he was a wiry little guy.  Haley is also a downright awesome actor who pretty much specializes in the role of the fucked up creepy guy.  Returning to the rest of the cast, I feel Ebert put it best when he described the cast as ‘a series of teenagers who are introduced, haunted by nightmares and then slashed to death by Freddy. So what? Are we supposed to be scared?’  The murders are also kind of boring when compared to the series history; it’s pretty much just Kreuger using the glove and only the glove, as opposed to altering the already fucked up dreamscape.

Theatre: I’m now pretty happy I couldn’t get anyone to accompany me.

Buy: Nope, nothing special here.

Rent: If only to see Jackie Earle Haley be awesome.

Download: Actually, this would be better than renting.  It’s not too great.
