Teaching English in Japan
Every wanted to visit Japan? Every year, many who have dreamed of visited the land of the rising sun make use of the many English teaching programs that will fly you out there for a year or five, if you find you really love it down there. A deadlines from a few of the programs, like the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme or AEON, are coming up quickly.
I was recently made aware of something known as the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme (JET). Essentially, you get to go to Japan, and live there for a year, or up to five if you fin
d you really love the place. I’m sure there are at least a few people who found a way to arrange that they remained there for life. I spoke to Miho Trudeau, the Calgary area coordinater, and asked her to tell me a little bit about the program.
Now, first and foremost, teaching might not really be your style. That’s alright; there are actually two paths you can take. If you’ve a decent grasp of Japanese, enough to work in a Japanese environment, with a minimal amount of teaching, you can apply to programs like JET as a coordinator for international relations. They basically work in an office environment and design exchange projects, plan events, give speeches, compose newsletters, visit schools. You’ll essentially be a public official. Do note that you might still end up doing a bit of teaching in the process.
If you’re looking to apply, there’s a few basic requirements you’ll have to fulfill. First, you’ll need to be a university graduate. Second, either know Japanese or be willing to learn it, you’re going to be living in Japan after all. And finally, you’ll need to have a decent command of the English language, I mean, you’ll be teaching it over there, right?
“One thing a lot of people might be concerned about, you don’t actually have to be the most outgoing person to go,” said Miho Trudeau, program coordinator for JET. “You have to enjoy seeing people and working with them every day, but you do not have to be extremely extroverted and always entertaining. A lot of people are intimidated by it, but all kinds of people are encouraged to apply.”

er younger children or high school students. You list your preference, though you can still be placed with a group that’s not your first choice. Bust hey, if you’re interested in Japanese pop culture, who better to learn about it from than the high schoolers who exist on the cutting edge of it? Sounds tempting, doesn’t it?
The acceptance process is a pretty long one, but if you’re determined enough, you’ll get through it. You’ll need to submit a paper application with a statement of personal interest, two reference letters, transcripts, proof of graduation, an application form, proof of citizenship in your country of residence and finally a criminal records and medical health check. I know what you’re thinking – holy hell, that’s a long list. But consider, they’re investing quite a bit in you here. They want to be certain you won’t flake out on them or suddenly go mad and think you’re a flock of geese.
After the initial application, there’s an interview screening stage. Once you get through the interview, acceptance letters are usually mailed out in late spring. At that point, you’ll be placed with a contracting organization.

As it is, you’re probably wondering what it’s like living there, right? Mrs. Trudeau gave me her two cents on the matter:
“It’s very different, an entirely different country and culture. Physically, there’s a lot of geographical differences. Living on either a mainland island or even a small island may be coastal or mountainous. The weather is very different, as is the culture. Different language, values, et cetera. It’s a big transition for a lot of people.
“The program is a lot more than [teaching] English, it’s really about cultural exchange. You aren’t just teaching English or using your translation and interpretation skills, you’re teaching about Canada and yourself and learning a lot about Japan. You’re sharing a lot with other people.”
Well, there you have it. If you’ve ever found yourself fascinated with Japanese culture, if you’ve ever dreamed about spending a bit of time living in Japan, well, there are a multitude of programs out there for you.
I know I’m going. Maybe not this year, but sometime in the future, I’ll be writing these articles while teaching English in the land of the rising sun.
Standards are a good thing to have- after all, without them, one might end up with a creature that resembles a cross between Oscar the Grouch and sasquatch; one that’s about as pleasant to be around as it sounds.
Yeah, probably a pretty lame opener. But hey, I’ve a nasty cold right now, so I can be forgiven for being a touch slow-witted. It certainly seems we’ve similar aspirations in the relationship field, though- dating a bit and seeing what the world’s got to offer, that is.
Someone saying they’re a “nice guy” is just their way of going “I’m spineless, pity me.” I’ve no patience for them, myself- I’ll wager they’ve got to be rather infuriating to deal with.
If you’re looking for intellectual conversation, we should get along just fine- I’ve been rather starved for it of late, I’m sorry to say.
