Automotive Saturday: The $1K 240SX
The majority of car enthusiasts these days are usually one of two things, broke or soon to be broke. It’s not exactly an affordable hobby to have or a particularly wise one what with the mass depreciation vehicles are subject to.
So, why do we do it? What “drives” us to spend our hard earned coin on something we are almost guaranteed to see no return on?
I think the answer to that depends on the individual but I also think it usually centers around the idea that these cars are our hobbies and we love them. You can’t really explain why you love something the way you do. It’s just a subconscious attachment we as car enthusiasts really have no control over.
So, with that in mind. Let’s take a look at how affordable it also can be to be a car enthusiast these days in Western Canada. I present to you Wild Gunmen’s Project $1K 240SX.
It’s as simple as it sounds. We gave ourselves $1,000 to build the most stereotypical car enthusiasts car we could. This price had to include everything we bought on the car and the car itself.

But seriously, that’s pretty impressive savings.. my roommate was trying to restore a 1984 Camaro, but he didn’t know engines so he probably spent $5k in a mechanic’s shop on parts and labor, eventually he started doing his own paint job and everything and that was working out great.. I remember doing the exhaust and gaskets with him.. pain in the arse.. but damn that made a world of difference on his vehicle from when he bought it cause the engine went from sounding dead to a nice purr on idle.
ahh this is cool as hell. I have an s13 coupe that exceeds a 1K budget in suspension alone but that’s…not the point haha. Mine has 200sx mesh wheels on it too, surprisingly.
I’ve also got a 200sx, but it’s an SE-V6 so it had ugly dinner plate wheels on it. Oh well. Fixed that.
