Voyage Of The Damned: Bram Stoker’s Death Ship

Dracula. The very name conjures up before the mind’s eye a multitude of images; the piercing eyes of Bela Lugosi, the skeletal, necrotic form of Shreck, the charisma of Frank Langella or the brooding melancholy of Oldman. The template of an entire genre, the vampire count has become an icon, though lately to be fair also something of a joke, particularly in a post-Twilight world. Jim Henson’s workshop laid the foundation with the character of the Count, and the final nails may well have been laid in the coffin by Mel Brooks with Dracula: Dead and Loving It. To return to the vampire some measure of dignity and the capacity to evoke terror is no mean feat in the wake of the oeuvre of Stephanie Meyer, but thankfully IDW Publishing has proven up to the challenge with Bram Stoker’s Death Ship, the story of Count Dracula’s voyage to England.
Written by Gary Gerani(co-creator of horror legend Pumpkinhead) and illustrated by Stuart Sayger, Death Ship is a story set within the fr
amework of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, specifically the tale of the count’s voyage from Varna, Moldavia to Whitby, England. In the novel the tale is told in the span of a single chapter, a mere 13 pages long, relayed mainly through newspaper clippings detailing the captain’s log of the Demeter, a Russian cargo vessel whose crew met with a mysterious fate at sea, the sole survivor being a large dog which flees into the countryside. No trace of the crew is found, save that of the dead body of the captain, lashed to the wheel with a crucifix clutched in his hands. The log of the Demeter details a series of strange disappearances and growing paranoia on the ship, the crew vanishing one by one until finally only the captain remains. The captain. . .and possibly something else. In the hands of Gerani, the story becomes significantly more detailed, as we come to know the men of the Demeter, their hopes for a prosperous and safe journey, and their terror at the slow realization that they are being hunted.
A story set within the greater story of Dracula, Death Ship is a bridge between the Gothic grandeur of Transylvania and the gas-lit streets of 19th century London, but even as a strand within a larger narrative the story is a compelling one. Unlike Van Helsing or the other heroes of the novel, the crew of the Demeter have no idea of what’s happening to them. There’s also no safe haven to be found, as the men are trapped on the ocean, in a wooden ship, with a monstrosity that rises each night to stalk them. It’s an almost perfect tale of terror, a haunted house story on par with Alien that immediately tosses aside the notion of simply fleeing the haunted place. There’s nowhere to run.
Gerani’s script takes the simple 13-page story and expands upon it, providing depth and character to the thumbnail depictions provided in Stoker’s novel. The unnamed captain remains stalwart and true, if increasingly beleaguered, and the first mate (unnamed in the novel) Anatole Blok is a hard and amoral man whose sadism almost rivals that of the creature stalking him. Sayger’s art has a fluid and dreamlike quality, and under his pen the panicked features of the men and the close confines of the Demeter are brought to the fore in a manner that’s at once engaging and claustrophobic. As to the count himself, he is less a character in the story than a presence, a half-glimpsed shadow and the impression of something utterly alien and monstrous. This is not a ’sexy’ portrayal of the lord of vampires by any stretch of the imagination. Mention should also be made of the impressive covers provided by Cliff Neilsen, who provides the cover of each issue as well as the collected edition with a cinematic and ominous style that draws the eye and captures the growing dread as each chapter unfolds.
Collected into a single volume, Bram Stoker’s Death Ship is an entertaining and unsettling little tale. Knowledge of Stoker’s novel isn’t a requirement to enjoy Death Ship, but it can provide some enjoyably creepy foreknowledge of the doom about to befall the crew of the Demeter. If you’re looking for a throwback to the more badass vampire of yesteryear and a horror comic worthy of the name, check it out for some ghoulishly fun Halloween reading.
