Investing in more dark shrines, researching into stims, and debating whether a Protoss rush was better than a Zerg one were among the topics shouted across Switchbox, Calgary’s “Gaming and Internet Palace”, this past Saturday. Those topics, while foreign to most non-gaming Calgarians, were clear to those at Switchbox’s Starcraft II tournament last Saturday, hosted by Project X. The event was a 2v2 double elimination tournament that featured over a thousand dollars in prizes, and was the first team-based SCII tournament for the southeast Switchbox located on McLeod Trail.
The tournament began with sixteen teams lasting seven hours until the finals, and despite the competitive atmosphere, everyone retained a friendly attitude.
“It’s kind of odd, really, that all these people could come together, [and] be at each others throats for six – eight hours of the day, yet walk away as friends,” says Benjamin Barager, co-organizer of Project X. “I think that’s pretty cool.” Switchbox is a chain of “digital entertainment facilities” founded in Calgary in 2002, combining excellent technology and a friendly environment to play a wide variety of multiplayer, cooperative and solo video games.
Among the multitude of leather gaming chairs, black PC’s, and empty energy drinks, Team Serbia prepares for their match against one of the more challenging opponents, Team Try Hard. Serbia’s “Dapierow”, a.k.a. Petar Lazinica and his teammate, Bojan Micic (LineEmUp), registered for tournament the night before, practicing only a few team games to prepare. Micic has attended four SCII tournaments, taking first place at Switchbox’s previous 1v1 tournament, while this is Petar’s first SCII competition. Both have been avid players of SCII since the beta was released earlier this year.
“Basically, we play the game safe. Stop enemy offenses, build the economy and a bigger army, go aggressive and stop their defenses,” Lazinica says as he relaxes after his seventh win of the day. “We don’t like to do anything too risky.”
After playing and losing both matches against Team Try Hard, despite being Zerg rushed, known in the community as a cheese tactic used to eliminate an opponent quickly, they remained optimistic and enthusiastic for the next tournament.
“We made it pretty far for our first 2v2. We just need more practice,” Lazinica comments. Team Serbia will attempt a comeback at the 1v1 competition on November 13 at Switchbox.
“People say you don’t even win if you Zerg rush,” Micic says when asked about the strategy used against him in their final game against Try Hard. Another team saw a rush through a different angle.
“If they Zerg rush us, it’s pretty beatable, [but] you don’t see that happening at the pro level,” Justin Woo (known as Flavor in-game) said when asked about the rush tactic. Teammate Kurt Mitchell (Cynic) seemed confident in himself on defending a rush if it occurred in one of their matches. Together, they make up Team SupWitIt, having only lost two of their twelve games and winning the tournament. They were awarded with $250 and various Switchbox prize packs.
Starcraft II is a competitive real-time strategy game that boasts vibrant maps and landscapes, complete with updated armies and a brand new 3D engine. SCII is the sequel to the original award-winning game of the same name. The game features three different races: the human Terrans, the mechanized Protoss, and the insectoid Zerg class. Each have their own strengths and weaknesses, and offer up varied styles of gameplay, demanding many unique strategies.
If you’re itching to get involved with the gaming community in Calgary, especially for demonstrating your 1v1 SCII skills, Switchbox and Project X are teaming up to host the solo tournament on November 13.
Project X is a gaming event group located in Calgary that aims to create a gaming community for the city by hosting events such as “LANsomnia”, an over-night gaming spree, and other themed gaming events. Regularly teaming up with Switchbox to host events, they offer many scheduled events on their website, projectxlan.com, ranging from recreational gaming to competitive tournaments and all-nighters. Managed by Barager and a coworker, Project X has been a work in progress for them, but Barager feels it is slowly coming together.
“The reason we started Project X was because we love being a part of the community, we love the atmosphere and the people who come to events like this, and what they have to bring to the table. Because no matter what they are playing, no matter how good or bad they are, they can relate to these games, to the interactions, and every little nuance of it.”
