TMR: Splinter, A Rural Thing
For Halloween, to make the premiere of The Walking Dead more special, as well as it just being Halloween, I rented some horror movies to celebrate with some friends. I picked up The Burrowers, a western horror which sucked, The House of the Devil¸ which we never got around to watching, and Splinter, which was a lot better than I’d expected, partially because it reminded me of one of my favourite movies ever, John Carpenter’s The Thing.
The reason The Thing is such an awesome movie is because of cast, effects, and, well, pretty much everything else. 
Kurt Russell stars as R.J. MacReady, a helicopter pilot stationed at an Antarctic research station. A dog from a neighbouring Norwegian station is aggressively chased into MacReady’s station, and is adopted by the crew. As it turns out, the dog is a shapeshifting alien that could be any of the crew, and even if it is chopped into many pieces, all of those pieces are still deadly little beings. Paranoia and suspicion rule the station as no one knows who to trust. There’s one particularly memorable scene where someone is being defibrillated and the one doing the shocking, his arms smash through the wounded person’s chest. The chest then turns into a massive mouth and bites off the shocker’s arms. It’s goddamn madness, I tell you, and it’s a fantastic movie. If you’re also a fan of this film, you should check out the videogame sequel that they made as well as the upcoming prequel, which takes place at the Norwegian station.
The movie Splinter isn’t exactly like The Thing, but it felt similar, at least in terms of the beast raging through the film. A couple on a camping trip get carjacked by a felon and his junkie girlfriend and when car troubles force them to stop at a gas station, the junkie finds the station attendant in the bathroom, horribly deformed, covered in huge splinters, and no longer in control of his body. It kills the junkie and the three others take refuge in the small gas station. The junkie’s body is then also infected with whatever is attacking the people, who shortly discover that even pieces of the creature, like in The Thing, are dangerous and able to attack. The movie benefits from decent special effects, (lots of breaking bones) and a relatively unknown but talented cast.
Both of these movies could be considered to be part of the subgenre of body horror. Body horror is, obviously, horror films where the horror comes from the decay and distortion of the body. These movies typically are fairly messy, with more fluids than just blood flowing strongly. Wikipedia mentions that “disease, decay, parasitism, mutilation, or mutation” are all common factors in these films, and David Cronenberg is known for making them. Another good example or two from this particular subgenre would be Re-Animator and Cabin Fever.
Theatre: It would only be ok in a theatre, and would probably be best to sae your money.
Buy: It’s good, but not that good.
Rent: Definitely give it a boo if you get the chance.
Download: Only if you can’t find it to rent anywhere; B-movies should get financial support.
