TMR: Big Man Japan, Killing A Tradition
Big Man Japan is a movie from 2007 that is a satire of both the classic daikaiju films as well as modern entertainment.
Before I get into it, let me say the reason for the lack of an article last week. A friend of mine died, and I had to attend to a few things. I like doing this, but it has it’s place.
Daikaiju means ‘giant monster’ in Japanese, so clearly you can guess what kind of movies those are. Godzilla is the most famous, in terms of Japanese created monsters (no idea where King Kong would fit), and the most recent one, to my mind, would be the Cloverfield monster. Another popular example would be everyone’s favorite show, Power Rangers.
Despite the sheer lameness of the Power Ranger type show, they have been very popular over in Japan for decades. Also, despite this, Godzilla and that whole kind of monster movie is still fairly popular. Yeah, not…ya know, in the mainstream, but they still have a faithful and large following. I loved them growing up, but having no money and being a child, I never got the opportunity to see too many movies of the genre. The first one I ever saw was Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla, and to be honest, it wasn’t great. It was pretty absorbing though, and I did like to see giant monsters tearing down cities, so I kept searching until Power Rangers damn near completely ruined my view of the whole thing.
Big Man Japan is a mockumentary first and foremost. It follows the life of Masaru Daisato, the current in a long line of Japan’s protectors from giant monsters. His life is exceedingly miserable and he is generally not respected or appreciated by the public in any way and is only treated slightly better by those who have to have him in their lives. When strange monsters rear their ugly, strangely human heads, however, Daisato still does what he must (and is poorly paid to do). After receiving an extreme amount of electricity through his nipples, he grows to tremendous size and wields a giant and magically appearing baton.
These two very different states of being for a film make it feel very bipolar. The majority is extremely depressing, though realistic in the portrayal of characters and society’s attitude toward this sort of thing. Anything, no matter how odd, can be seen as commonplace if it’s been going on for decades, and this movie reflects that. Conversely, when the movie isn’t depressing it’s frenetic and extremely strange. The monsters have apparently been lacking in terms of threatening looks as time has gone by in this world and while still fairly dangerous, in their own rights, they aren’t the sort of thing one would be too scared of. All of this cinematic strangeness culminates in what is easily the biggest surprise ending ever. And not just in the sense of a storyline twist, but a complete change in tone, look, everything. I don’t even know how to describe it, other than how I felt while watching it; my mouth literally dropped open and any semblance of rational though for what I was watching died. I went from kind of bored to incredibly confused and focused in a startlingly quick time.
Theatre: No, it was pretty damn boring.
Buy: You really need to like giant monster movies and satire to buy this thing.
Rent: If you can find it…save your money.
Download: Sure, just don’t expect to be either happy or understanding through most of it.
