TMR: The Predator Bum Rush
Predators is the sequel that does not take into account the earlier sequel, Predator 2. What this means? Danny Glover’s battle was for naught.
In the latest installment in the Alien/Predator franchise, Adrian Brody, Topher Grace, and other less bookish sorts are dropped onto an alien planet that is used as a game preserve for the titular characters. The humans are composed of some top notch warriors, not including Topher, and are used to working by themselves primarily. So in addition to fighting against deadly alien hunters, they must also fight a battle with very nature. D’awww.
Before I get into whatever semi-related tangent I think of while writing this paragraph, I feel it’s fairly important that I saythat I fell asleep watching the movie. It’s not that it was bad per se, it was just kinda boring. It started out sort of captivating, but strangely, once the Predators were actually revealed, things seemed to come to a screeching halt. Nothing was interesting, and things started getting pretty damn sleepy in the particular area the movie was playing.
I had been told that the same creators of Aliens Vs. Predators: Requiem had a hand in this latest strictly Predator film, but from my
cursory glances, this seems to be untrue. This was more or less the only reason I ended up watching this movie. Requiem, while considered by most to be pretty bad, was a movie I quite enjoyed. The monsters were revealed right away, the cast were a bunch of people you recognize but don’t know the names of, people started dying, horrible things started occuring right from the get go and I liked this. The movie was trash pandering to the lowest common denominator, and I found this utter lack of pretension to be kind of refreshing. Sometimes, not often, but sometimes, it can be nice for things to just leap off the diving board instead of advancing and retreating, back and forth, scared to make the final dive of showing the beasties.
The Predators have been around since 1987, fighting Schwarzeneggar and Jesse ‘The Goddamn Body’ Ventura, and helped to launch their political careers. I don’t know how this is related, but it seems to be, at least in my mind. I’m not sure how, but they became entwined in James Cameron’s Alien franchise, and if this only resulted in the first-person shooter from way back in 1999, I’d have been happy; that game kicked serious ass. One thing I’m extremely happy about in terms of the joining of the franchises is that H.R. Giger didn’t get to design both species, as this would have been boring as hell. Both species would have looked like angry penises instead of just the one. The only people who would have been happy with that are probably fat, probably semi-gothic fat chicks, or really creepy guys.
Theatre: I’m very glad I couldn’t get anyone interested in seeing this now.
Buy: This would only be for the diehards.
