I am, and always have been, a huge fan of the Pokémon series, both the games and anime, and although every generation of games gets better, some changes need to occur. The games are fantastic, and helped make Nintendo what it is today, but we all know there are some things that need to be changed! Here is my top 10 things that need to be changed or improved upon.
Look, I love cute Pokémon, in particular, Pichu, but he still had a unique look. Some of the newer Pokémon, like Bibarel, Spheal, Luvdisc, etc. They really are stupid! They don’t look like powerful creatures that kick serious ass! Nintendo needs to understand that many of the people who still play Pokémon grew up with the first generation of awesome Pokémon, and now are faced to deal with silly and cute Pokémon. Many of the newer generations of Pokémon are recycled ideas of the first generation too. For example, Beautifly is almost identical to Butterfree, and Spheal is similar to Seel. Most of the Pokémon now are easily identifiable with real-life animals, as opposed to some of the older ones like Jynx, Abra, Machamp, Hypno, etc. They weren’t really based on anything, but pure creativity. Obviously there were Pokémon in the past that were clearly based off real-life animals, but they were so original; nothing like them. My point is, let’s see some more unique and creative Pokémon please!!!
With 500+ Pokémon now (with the release of Pokémon Black and White in Japan), it’s almost impossible to ‘catch them all’. There’s just no way!!! There are many Pokémon now that are only available through events or conventions. It’s kind of hard for everyone who owns the Pokémon games to fly to the New York Anime and Comic Book Convention, or ComicCon, or an opening of a real Pokémon Centre just to get a Pokémon. That’s totally unfair! Sure it’s special if you have one of the exclusive Pokémon… but is it really fair to the rest of us? Now I can’t catch a Pokémon because I didn’t fly to some convention? Players should be able to catch Pokémon if they work hard and become more experienced Trainers!
Don’t you love when you defeat a Gym Leader, you head off to the next town to train, and within two minutes you are in the next town expected to have levelled up your Pokémon by like ten levels? This needs to stop. I enjoy the games, and I wouldn’t mind if they were a tad longer so that training wasn’t so tedious. It sometimes takes a walk through a patch of grass to get to the next town and then you’re left with a small area to level up your Pokémon ten levels? It takes days! I’m sorry, but that is just not right. If it takes Ash twenty-five episodes to get to the next city with a Gym Leader, it should take me more than two minutes. Battling should be fun and constantly a new experience.
I think it’s safe to say that a large majority of the people who play the Pokémon games are not ten years old anymore, nor do they want to play a ten year old in the games. It would be a great innovation for the Pokémon games to allow players to customize their sprites as Pokémon Trainers. It was great when players could finally play as a female, but now I think it would be nice to be able to play an older character. There are older Trainers as you go about your adventure, so why do you always have to play the ten year old? It would be nice to be able to play a trainer similar to your age and be able to customize its looks; the game would then become more personal and unique to you.
Who else is getting sick of HMs? How irritating is it when you go into a cave and you realize, “DAMMIT! I NEED ROCK SMASH!? FUUUU!” Then you realize you don’t have a Pokémon that can learn Rock Smash, so you find some poor soul in the PC to make an HM Slave out of. You know how it is. You find that Machop that you got at level 7, make him learn a few HM’s so that you can get through that cave, and once you are out of the cave, you dump him back in the PC again. What I think would be great, would be if HM’s were like TM’s, only except you could teach them to Pokémon over and over again. I think it would help and get rid of the whole ‘HM Slave’ term. In Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver, there are eight HM’s, which is too much. In the upcoming Pokémon Black and White games, there is suppose to be only six HM’s, but I still think something needs to be done about this.
Every time a Pokémon game comes out they release two different copies. The main differences are that they both have different Pokémon so that you can get together with a friend and trade. Really, they are pretty much the same game. It sounds fine and dandy, until a thrid game gets released that has been improved with all glitches fixed and really, it’s really just an awesome version of the first two games combined! Pokémon Yellow was the first of the third games to be released, but at least it was a little different from Pokémon Blue and Red. In Pokémon Yellow, players started with Pikachu as their starter Pokémon, and Team Rocket members were actually Jessie and James. It was made more so for fans of the anime so that they really could pretend to be Ash. Then Crystal came along, Emerald, and now Platinum. The only third game I have ever played was Emerald, and I very much enjoyed it, but that was because I never played Ruby and Sapphire. In my opinion, just make one solid game, or keep the two games going. It sucks when people have to buy another game, or feel that they should simply because it has been improved.
You all know you want to, and so do I. I think it would be great to have the option to join Team Rocket; even if the plot did not change and you started out as a harmless Trainer, perhaps once you defeated the Elite Four, you could have the choice to join Team Rocket. Seeing how Pokémon does appeal to a large number of children, I know that if Nintendo were to approve this, it would be anything ‘M’ rated, but it would be fun to play the game from their perspective. Here’s how I see it happening: Team Rocket would ask you at the end of the game to join Team Rocket since you defeated the Elite Four and are obviously a strong trainer. If you said yes, a new story arc would begin and you would have a new sprite, report back to the Team Rocket HQ instead of ‘Mom’, and would travel around battling Trainers. I am sure it could be done, and I know a lot of people want to join Team Rocket. You would see the region from a whole new perspective, a much darker one!
Lately, the Pokémon spinoffs have been seriously lacking. Pokémon Battle Revolution for the Nintendo Wii failed due to it being extremely boring and lacking a plot, and now PokéPark Wii: Pikachu’s Adventure has just been released in North America which shows promise, but is clearly aimed at younger gamers. The Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series for the Nintendo Wii have been quite disappointing, and again, aimed at younger gamers. Here’s what I want to see. A remake of the original Pokémon Trading Card Game for the Nintendo DS, a new version of Pokémon Snap, and a brand new Pokémon Stadium. The Super Mario Bros. Series has been extremely successful with spinoff games, and I don’t see why Pokémon can’t get into that game too. There needs to be a seriously good platformer of Pokémon, much like Super Mario 64. It can be done, and I think that it would do Nintendo some good. I am dying for a new Pokémon Snap actually; that was one of my favourites.
Although the main Pokémon games are fabulous and still entertain me to bits, there ought to be some kind of a plot change. I’m not saying revamp the game entirely, but perhaps a few changes to the storyline could occur. Do you have to go to eight cities and towns to defeat gym leaders and then just be done with it? Maybe there could be more Gym Leaders, or maybe after the Elite Four the story wouldn’t end and you could keep going somewhere else much like Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver did. That was defintely an improvement. In the anime, there are many characters that aren’t Pokémon Trainers looking to defeat the Gym Leaders like Ash. Brock was a Gym Leader who wanted to become the world’s best Pokémon Breeder! Why not? Why couldn’t you become the world’s best Pokémon Coordinator? There are many roles in the Pokémon world that aren’t just being a Trainer and it could be fun to have different story arcs to choose from. Once you’re done being a Coordinator, perhaps then you try the game as a Trainer. Personally, I don’t know what they could do to really change the plot; it is as it is, but something needs to change. The game needs a little spicing up and I know that it’s doable.
I think a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game should finally come to life within the Pokémon family. It could be exactly like the main games, except that all the Trainers would be real people! I would be all over it like hot pancakes, I’m telling ya! It would also give more people a chance to play it as most people own a computer, but not everyone owns a DS. The online world of Pokémon could be HUGE! All regions could be accessible and you could beat Gym Leaders that obviously would be A.I., but all the Trainers would be real people. I’m not a game developer, so I don’t know all the minor details of this non-existent game, but I do know it could be great.
So, that’s my list of all the changes I would like to see done to the Pokémon series! There are other things that would be nice, like changing the battle cries of the Pokémon, but going on and on about small details would be silly. I love the Pokémon games and I want to see nothing but the best future for them. I will always continue to support them and go along for the ride!
