A Canadian movie about an outsider in a world of LARPers, causing chaos on the search for his girlfriend.
In 2009, a first time director created the movie The Wild Hunt and quickly won awards at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Slamdance Film Festival. In the film, a guy (Erik) and his girlfriend (who gives a shit, she’s a whiny, indecisive whore), who have a tense and seemingly unhappy relationship, are separated when the girl goes to join the guy’s brother in a days long LARP (Live Action Role Playing). After a few recurring nightmares, the guy decides he needs to set things right with his girlfriend, and bring her back to reality. Erik enlists the help of his strange brother, Bjorn, to help him ‘rescue’ his girlfriend from the ‘Celts.’
I had heard the movie was pretty good, not just because of the critical reactions, but from a lot of random real people. This almost always means that the movie is a good one, in my experiences, though there are always still the occasional piece of shit that squeezes through these two particular cracks. It took me a long time to finally bite the bullet and watch it, but goddamn I’m glad I did. I don’t often have any sort of physical reaction to films, other than horrible knots in my gut during graphic rape scenes, but this movie was somehow able to achieve the same horrible knots in the gut, but without rape! Just through pure drama, I guess.
One thing the movie really reminded me of was my own history with roleplaying games. I never LARPed and never will, but this movie actually makes it seem not only appealing but outright awesome. However, as anyone with access to YouTube has learned, most of those who LARP are sad, sad folk, hurling tennis ball lightning bolts, and occasionally busting out the deadly death ball. It is lame. Classic pen and paper Roleplaying, however, is only as lame as those who play it.
I’ve recently tried explaining the appeal of even the pen and paper RPing to someone who finds the mere mention of ‘Dungeons and 
Dragons’ to be funny. Once he’d stopped laughing, I explained how it can be fun to pretend to be someone else, someone with a bit more control of their lives. More laughter. I was getting irritated by the close-mindedness. Finally it struck me as to how to translate the appeal. I mentioned how I enjoy writing and he was with me so far. I mentioned how annoying it can be to be able to write so much and then come to a complete blank as to what should happen next. RPing is sort of like tag team writing in that once you’re out of ideas, someone else will likely have some ideas. This description finally penetrated the thick skull of my friend, and while he still thought it sounded dumb, he could grasp why some would enjoy it.
Let me just add this about this friend; I recently tricked him into thinking that not only was Colonel Sanders still alive, but was sharing an apartment with Walt Disney.
