TMR: Underestimating The Other Guys
The Other Guys was a movie I didn’t expect to be very good at all, but deceptively tricked me.
During my Xmas sabbatical, where I went back to BC, I watched the newest Will Ferrell / Mark Wahlberg movie, The Other Guys. As you’ve already guessed, I had low hopes for it. Downright negative expectations, I’ll go so far as saying. Thankfully I was deadly wrong.
After New York’s two top detectives die in an incredibly stupid, incredibly awesome way, (‘You thinking what I’m thinking?’ ‘Aim for 
the bushes!’) there is a power vacuum with the remaining detectives. Mark Wahlberg’s character, who was on the fast track to success until he had an altercation with a ‘biracial angel,’ is partnered with Will Ferrell’s desk jockey detective. After discovering some lame bureaucratic illegalities going on with a rich … British guy played by Steve Coogan, it’s discovered that these boring, technically unlawful crimes are only the tip of the iceberg, if that iceberg were a CONSPIRACY.
I expected this to be more or less a straightforward cop movie, with Will Ferrell tossed in to be occasionally weird. This was not the case. The movie is like a better paced Anchorman, which for the first half of the movie, I found to be kind of dull, and then Jack Black dropkicked a dog off of a bridge. From that point onward, that movie seemed to lose its mind. This movie starts out intense, like any other action movie, and kind of funny, than starts to lose its sanity earlier on and at a steady pace. While many of us have thought it, only this movie had the fucking balls to discuss the topic of sarcastically learning to dance ballet for the reason of bullying. Or a very quiet fight at a funeral. Or Michael Keaton constantly and unknowingly quoting TLC.
One of the complaints I had for the movie was Ferrell’s character’s alter ego becoming so out there. He started fairly funny, but it seemed to just start becoming far too broad. Rob Riggle, one of the detectives competing for the place in the power vacuum, also fell kind of flat compared to his appearances in other films. He wasn’t bad, but he didn’t have the loud sadism as he did in The Hangover, or the bizarre intensity of Step Brothers. I should mention that he is always loud, but he’s very good at being loud. It’s hard to explain. Even his whispers destroy eardrums. I thought Wahlberg had done a few comedies before, but not as much as I’d thought. Despite this he seems to have good comedic timing and puts to good use his very particular pacing of his speech. For a good example of this notable pacing, just watch The Happening. Go on, I dare ya. Eye that lemon drink.
