Mariano Rivera’s unique ability to rise up in the biggest moments revealed itself in his very first playoff appearance, which was the second game of the 1995 AL Division Series between the Mariners and Yankees.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post began his book on the 1996 Yankees championship season, “Birth of a Dynasty,” by positing the question: What if Buck Showalter, the Yankees’ manager in 1995, had known what he had in Mariano Rivera? More specifically, what if Showalter had gone to Rivera instead of dead-armed David Cone to protect the Yankees’ two-run lead to start the eighth inning?
His point is that the Yankees might have won the series

Here we are, two months into another long-looking Mariners season, and once again, we have an Ichiro question that the team refuses to answer.
Last year, Ichiro often looked tired and still he tied for the league lead, playing 161 games. Meanwhile, Casper Wells, supposedly one of the pieces of a brighter Mariners future, at times seemed welded to the bench.
This season, the former leadoff-hitting Ichiro hasn’t been much help hitting third ken griffey jr shoes. He has 14 RBI in 162 at-bats.

If Wedge’s hands are tied, it’s a sad commentary on the state of this team. If they aren’t tied, he should put the productive hitters in productive places. Move Dustin Ackley back to the third spot. Or move Justin Smoak, whose bat has awakened on the road, into that spot. And move Ichiro way down.
This trip, which will end with three games in Colorado, has been a disaster. The Mariners have swung the bats meekly. Their starting pitching has been sketchy. Even Felix Hernandez got shelled in Cleveland.
What does it say about this trip when the only thing worth celebrating has been a Kevin Millwood outing? Millwood doesn’t count. He’s merely a place holder for all of the supposed phenoms in the minors.
And for all the anguish about the performances of Brendan Ryan, Chone Figgins, Miguel Olivo and Brandon League griffey shoes, they don’t count either. All of them will be gone by next season at the latest.
The only thing that matters about League’s struggles as closer Thursday — his third blown save — is that his trade value suffers. The Mariners need League to be effective so they can deal him in July.

Ken Griffey Jr. announces retirement
“The players didn’t hear the news – Ken Griffey Jr. had just announced his retirement – until manager Don Wakamatsu huddled his Seattle Mariners around him just before batting practice Wednesday.

“It took a little old-fashioned Ken Griffey Jr. magic — and perhaps the inspiration of Don Wakamatsu’s first career ejection — but the Mariners finally snapped out of their recent funk with a dramatic 4-3 victory over Toronto on Thursday afternoon at Safeco Field.
Griffey drove a run-scoring single to right field with one out in the bottom of the ninth to cap a three-run rally that ended Seattle’s five-game losing streak ken griffey jr shoes.

“Ken Griffey Jr. will get another chance to play here in Florida, where he makes his home. Griffey is back in the lineup at designated hitter today despite the fact the Mike Sweeney has hit home runs in three consecutive days as the starting DH.
“A couple of different thoughts,” Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu said griffeys sneakers. “One is that it’s important that Griff play at least one game here. It was the first time Alexander had faced a pitch that fast. He didn’t swing. The pitcher mixed in a couple of curveballs, but Alexander wanted to hit the heat.
When he got another fastball, he smacked a line drive that landed just in front of the right fielder. That solid single gave him a sense of relief, and confidence.
He said he knew then that he could “hit anything” and channeled that into every batting-practice session leading up to his senior season.

“He can get there,” Bingham said. “If he doesn’t make it, who is going to? I hate to put that kind of pressure on him, but I’ve been in this league eight years and I don’t know if I remember seeing too many guys who are as talented as he is.

NBA | Charles Barkley arrested on DUI charges
Charles Barkley was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol early Wednesday.
An officer with a task force that targets drunken driving saw the former NBA star run a stop sign about 1:30 a.m., Gilbert police Lt. Eric Shuhandler said. Barkley was in Scottsdale’s Old Town area, a trendy spot in the Phoenix area.

Branch Rickey once said famously that luck is the residue of design. The Seattle-based architectural firm NBBJ was given the task of designing Safeco Field, though in the meeting to choose the architect, the Mariners cast the lone vote for HOK, the Kansas City powerhouse that had masterminded the highly praised Camden Yards.
“I think the M’s finally came around,” says Dennis Forsyth, the NBBJ architect who had the daunting position of project manager. “We weren’t their choice, and we were always walking up hill. But they’re proud of the field. Whenever I run into Chuck, I think he’s happy.”

Said Forsyth: “I think the PFD board had the same desire, and the Mariners had the same desire. That was the mission we were on — to make it fit into Pioneer Square and make it feel like it belonged in Seattle.”

And they did so in a way that even some of its fiercest critics have grudgingly admitted is an artistic success. “We opposed it because we felt professional baseball had plenty of its own money to build its own bloody stadium, and the Kingdome was only 20 years old,” he said. “Neither factor has changed.
“What they used to justify the wisdom of using a half-billion dollars which was desperately needed for other stuff was the economic development in the immediate area. The only economic development you see in the area is a strip club that they’ve been fighting.”
