“I’m not upset. When is Ken doing that?’ and that’s something I didn’t want to have my teammates, who I truly cared about, having to answer these types of questions day in and day out.”

I talked today to Mariners senior director of baseball information Tim Hevly, who accompanied Eric Wedge and Ken Griffey Jr. to Japan on what he called “a little weekend jaunt.”
The trio went on a whirlwind three-day (more or less) trip to Tokyo, leaving from Seattle last Friday afternoon and arriving in Tokyo on Saturday night. They left for home on Monday evening around 6 p.m. Tokyo time — and because of the vagaries of Asia to North America travel, arrived back in Seattle at 9:30 Monday morning.
The purpose of the trip was to promote the season-opening games in Japan between the Mariners and Oakland A’s, to take place March 28 and 29 at the Tokyo Dome. A’s manager Bob Melvin solely represented Oakland, while Yomiuri — which both owns the Giants and is helping present the games in Japan — requested that the M’s bring an additional person because this was their first time playing in the country. (You might recall that in 2003 — when Melvin was managing in Seattle — the Mariners had been scheduled to open in Japan, but the trip was canceled because of the Iraq war).

Hevly said Griffey, now a Mariners consultant and still a big name in Japan, volunteered for the task. I asked him if there was any consideration given to having Ichiro involved in the promotion, for obvious reasons.
“Ichiro is in Japan right now, and it wouldn’t have been a big deal to have him come, but that’s not what this event was set up to be,” he said. “The point was to have someone from our organization there to join with the managers to talk about the games. Ichiro is very focused on getting ready for the season, and it was nice not to disrupt his routine.”
One of the highlights of the trip for the Mariners contingent was a clinic they attended on Sunday at the Yomiuri training site, about an hour outside Tokyo, for about 110 kids from around Japan.
“That was terrific,” Hevly said. “The passion those kids have for baseball was really evident. The amount of energy from kids between 8 and 12 years old was amazing. They were very attentive. They want to be better.”
Wedge and Griffey both offered tips on various aspects of baseball. Among the attendees were a group of 36 kids from Fukushima, which had been devastated by last spring’s earthquake and tsunami. They road a bus four hours to attend, and got a special “meet and greet” with Griffey and Wedge afterward, in which they received some Mariner gear the team had sent with the group. The other kids received memorabilia as well, and the Mariners posed for pictures with all the participants.
“It was fun to see how excited they were,” Hevly said. “It’s a reminder how resilient kids are.”
Griffey, who made several tours of Japan as a player, is still recognized wherever he goes. When the group went to see a sumo tournament, one glance into the car from the security detail got them waved in. And on the last day of their stay, when Griffey headed out of the hotel, there was a “mini-riot,” in Hevly’s words, as fans surged toward his car for one last crack at an autograph.
“He’s definitely a big deal,” Hevly said.

As for the main event, the press conference, Hevly estimated that there were “easily 200 people there. The hotel ballroom was packed. There were 12 or 13 TV cameras in back, 100 to 150 print reporters, and about 50 photographers. It was a big deal.”

Bryce Harper learns how not to vent anger
Bryce Harper’s frustrated swing cost him a little blood and a little embarrassment, but no time on the field.
The teenager was lucky.
Harper took out his frustration on a wall Friday night, slamming his bat hard against the side of the tunnel leading to the clubhouse. The barrel smacked off the wall and hit his temple just above the left eye, causing a gash that needed 10 stitches after a 7-3 win over Cincinnati.
He was in the starting lineup again on Saturday night, wearing a white bandage over the lump just above his eyebrow.
“No problem, no headache,” the 19-year-old outfielder said. “I feel great. Ready to go.”
Manager Davey Johnson initially thought Harper would need a couple of days to recover. Harper texted him after he got stitches on Friday night and said the doctor had cleared him to keep playing.
When Johnson saw him on Saturday, he relented.
“There wasn’t any swelling around the eye to speak of,” Johnson said. “So he can take out that anger on the opposing pitcher instead of the walls around here.
“He’s real lucky, real fortunate. It could have been a heck of a lot worse.”
It’s been quite a two-week debut for Harper, who has been plunked and, now, has plunked himself while getting accustomed to the major league spotlight. Harper, the first overall pick in the 2010 amateur draft, had handled it well until Friday night.
His first promotion to the majors on April 28 drew comparisons to Ken Griffey Jr., the last 19-year-old to hit a homer batting left-handed. Harper hasn’t hit a homer yet, but his two-week stint has been all about hitting.
Philadelphia’s Cole Hamels hit him in the back with a pitch last Sunday as a way of welcoming him to the majors. Harper responded by stealing home later in the inning. Hamels got a five-game suspension.
When the Nationals arrived in town on Friday, Harper was brought to the dugout for a session with local media covering his Cincinnati debut. Johnson praised the way he’s handled all the attention.

Harper’s gash got the attention of Reds rookie shortstop Zack Cozart, who has never hurt himself while throwing a fit.
“I’ve thrown helmets,” Cozart said. “You get frustrated in the heat of the moment. I’ve never had anything like a bat come back and hit me. That’s kind of scary.”
Maybe he should be more like Reds All-Star second baseman Brandon Phillips, who doesn’t see a point in throwing or hitting anything after a bad at-bat.
“I laugh at myself,” Phillips said. “I don’t throw my helmet. It’s not the helmet’s fault. It’s not the bat’s fault.
“He’s just trying hard. He’s young. He’ll learn. The older he gets, he won’t do that. That just shows he’s wearing his emotions on his sleeve.”

Reds manager Dusty Baker learned how to handle frustration from a Hall of Famer early in his playing career.
“Everybody, when they’re young, has a temper,” Baker said. “I’ve seen guys throw their helmet on the ground and it bounces back up and hits them in the face.
“I remember one time I threw my helmet and Hank Aaron put his hand on the back of my neck and said he never wanted to see me do that again. Griffey was, for a time, the most famous and popular baseball player in America, and he put the Mariners on the map when they were, to the vast majority of the country, nothing more than an afterthought). Having him play a permanent role in the organization, as an advisor/instructor/goodwill ambassador, is a no-brainer.

Griffey back with Mariners as special consultant
Ken Griffey Jr. is returning to the Seattle Mariners as a special consultant less than a year after abruptly retiring from baseball, the team said Tuesday.
Griffey’s role is still being defined, but he’ll be involved with the Mariners at spring training and the regular season, along with visiting most of the Mariners minor-league affiliates.
Griffey’s agent, Brian Goldberg, said in an e-mail to The Associated Press that Griffey should be in Arizona next month. “The Mariners didn’t have to do this,” Goldberg said. “He and I are both appreciative of the opportunity.”
Griffey is also expected to be involved with marketing, broadcasting and community relations.
“I’m looking forward to staying very involved with the Mariners, working with the players throughout the organization, staying involved with the community and assisting in other areas of the organization,” Griffey said in a statement from the club. “It’s an exciting time and I’m very appreciative of the opportunity.”
Team President Chuck Armstrong said that despite Griffey’s abrupt retirement last June, when he simply issued a statement saying he was retiring, Griffey has been “steadfast in his desire to continue his relationship with the Mariners.”
Griffey, 41, spent the first half of his career with Seattle. He was an All-Star in 10 of his 11 seasons with the Mariners and was voted AL MVP in 1997.
After stints with the Cincinnati Reds, where he was an NL All-Star three times, Griffey played in 41 games for the Chicago White Sox in 2008. The next offseason, he came back to the Mariners as a part-time DH, hit .214 with 19 home runs and was carried off the field at the conclusion of the final regular-season home game.

Griffey came back in 2010 and was batting .184 without a home run when he cleaned out his locker. He said in his statement that without occasional starts off the bench, his continued presence would become an “unfair distraction” to the team, which he never wanted to be for his teammates.
“In his mind, he thought he didn’t have any real alternative,” Armstrong said. “He and I talked the day that he did leave and we might have wished that he did it differently, but in his mind, he did it the right way for himself and the franchise.
“For today as far as I’m concerned, all that’s behind us,” Armstrong added. “I’m just happy to have him back and welcome him back home.”
Mariners manager Eric Wedge embraces the move. He said Tuesday that it’s important for the club to stay in touch with its history and hopes that other former Mariners stars will come down to Arizona to talk to and work with the players.
“You look at the Hall-of-Fame player that he (Griffey) is and the experience that he’s had and the success that he’s had, obviously there’s a lot to be taken from that,” Wedge said.

Griffey excited for 22nd and possibly final season
Ken Griffey Jr. likes the offseason moves made by the Seattle Mariners so far – to the point he’s optimistically clearing his calendar late into the year.
“We’re going in the right direction,” Griffey said Sunday. “A couple of more wins, postseason, I don’t have anything planned until like early November. Hopefully we can have a lot of fun and continue on the path that we’re going.”
Griffey was back in town to raise the “12th Man Flag” before the Seattle Seahawks’ season finale against Tennessee. He spent a time during pregame on the field taking picture and visited with Titans running back Chris Johnson.
Griffey then ceremoniously raised the flag just before kickoff to arguably the loudest cheers inside the stadium this season.
After raising the ceremony, the slugger who is fifth on baseball’s all-time home run list with 611 said Mariners fans should be excited after the team traded for former Cy Young winner Cliff Lee and signed free agent Chone Figgins away from the rival Los Angeles Angels.
In November, Griffey agreed to a one-year deal to return to Seattle in 2010 for his 22nd major league season.
“This is going to be fun to watch,” Griffey said, his first comments to local media since he re-signing was announced on Nov. 11. “The people of Seattle should be really excited about what’s going on.”
After spending his first 11 seasons with Seattle and becoming a star, he played nine more with Cincinnati and the Chicago White Sox. Griffey returned to the Mariners in 2009 and almost single-handedly transformed what had been a fractured, bickering clubhouse with his leadership, energy and constant pranks.

The deal Griffey signed to return as a 40-year-old calls for a $2.35 million base salary. Baseball’s active home run leader would earn $3.9 million if he again has at least 400 plate appearances, Seattle’s attendance tops 2.5 million and Griffey again does not go on the disabled list while remaining on the roster for the entire season.
A 10-time All-Star and the 1997 AL MVP for the Mariners, Griffey hit .214 last season with 19 homers as a part-time DH. He was limited by a swollen left knee that required a second operation in as many offseasons.

Then, Ken Griffey Jr. awakened.
Seattle’s fading, 40-year-old star emerged for the pinch-hitting chance he reportedly snoozed through two weeks earlier to hit a game-winning single. That capped the Mariners’ three-run rally off AL saves leader Kevin Gregg in the ninth inning and a 4-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday.
“The greatest Mariner in history, coming through with the big hit,” Mike Sweeney said.
He singled to begin the rally off Gregg (0-1), then joined Ichiro Suzuki in giving Junior big, extended hugs in the dugout following the 10th game-ending hit of Griffey’s career.
Seattle snapped a five-game skid. And Griffey’s teammates mobbed him between first and second base.
The Mariners and their fans partied like it was 1995 and baseball’s active leader in home runs (630) and RBIs (1,835) was in his prime – instead of a .191-hitting part-timer with no homers and seven RBIs on his way to retirement.
Nine days ago his teammates, manager Don Wakamatsu and team executives rallied to his defense following a report he was unavailable to pinch-hit in an earlier loss because he was sleeping in the clubhouse.
“The last two weeks were probably the toughest in his career. But he knew we had his back. Probably everyone in Seattle had his back,” Sweeney said.

“We couldn’t be more happy for Griff, with all the stuff he’s been through the last could weeks,” said Josh Bard, who tied the game on a sacrifice fly immediately before Griffey’s hit. “You look at ‘June Bug’s’ career, what he’s accomplished – I know just from spring training how many times he got his knee drained, how many times he’s played hurt. To me, for anybody (to criticize him), it’s just ridiculous.”

Griffey dressed quickly Thursday and said he would not talk publicly about his retribution.
Gregg (0-1) had 12 saves in 13 chances before he allowed singles to Sweeney and Jose Lopez then walked Bradley to begin the ninth. Then he walked Casey Kotchman on a full-count pitch to make it 3-2.
After Bard’s sacrifice fly tied, it Griffey emerged to the delight of 20,452 roaring fans. He reached out and pulled a 2-1 fastball on a line into right field. Bradley scored easily from second base.
Shawn Kelley (2-0) pitched the top of the ninth for Seattle, which had been a season-low 12 games under .500 following a 3-2 loss to Toronto Tuesday night.
“To me, it’s walking guys that is unacceptable,” Gregg said, while lauding Griffey as a future Hall of Famer. “I didn’t execute my pitches right there.”

Wakamatsu, Seattle’s usually composed second-year manager, got his first career ejection for arguing Suzuki’s caught-stealing call that ended the eighth. The tirade while his players were emerging from the dugout between innings looked to be a ploy to fire them up. Replays showed Suzuki was indeed out.
Maybe it worked.
“Yeah, obviously,” Wakamatsu said, chuckling.
It sure kept any Mariner from sleeping through what became a dramatic ninth.
NOTES: Seattle’s Jason Vargas allowed just five hits in 6 2-3 innings. He allowed three or fewer runs for the seventh consecutive start. It looked like Jose Bautista’s two-run homer in the fifth plus a sacrifice fly in the seventh by Edwin Encarnacion would Vargas to his second loss since April 9. … Bautista’s liner was his 12th homer and the Jays’ 66th, tops in the majors. … Toronto’s Ricky Romero followed his first career shutout on Saturday in Toronto against Texas by allowing just four hits and a run in 6 2-3 innings.

Griffey says he dropped seven pounds this winter through diet and exercise
Just got done chatting with Ken Griffey Jr. in the clubhouse and he told me he dropped seven pounds, mainly because he changed his eating habits slightly and also was able to do more work than last year once his knee surgery got done on Oct. 11.
Griffey had knee surgery the previous off-season, also in October, but also was bothered by a bone spur that kept growing larger as the winter and then last season, wore on. Now, that bone spur has been removed. He says he was able to do more work this winter and that resulted in some of the weight loss.
He appears slimmed down over last year — at least in terms of excess bulk. His chest area appears larger in terms of muscle. Anyhow, we’ll know what kind of shape he’s in once he starts working out with the team.
Griffey hired a personal trainer for his son, Trey, a budding high school football star in Florida, and says he packed on 25 pounds of muscle. Trey was apparently working out so hard on a treadmill in the Griffey home that he burned out the motor.
“I go in there and there’s all smoke,” Griffey said. “That thing cost me ten grand.”
Not sure whether that’s an entirely true story, but treadmills have been known to burn out. Not the $10,000 kind, mind you, but we’ll choose to believe this tale. Anyhow, the reason I’m telling it is because Griffey says that when he saw his son’s results, he started to copy a lot of what the trainer had him do — minus the treadmill part.
“I don’t do treadmills,” he said.

Griffey says a friend of his just had an exercise bike shipped over from Italy to the Griffey household and that it can burn 2,400 calories in an hour. No, that isn’t a joke. And if true, it’s pretty incredible. I was just on a regular stationary bike at our condo last night, going at a pretty good clip, and burned 450 calories in a half-hour. That’s 900 in an hour on my bike, and trust me, it was a decent pace.
Well, this Griffey bike, which just arrived yesterday at his home, so he hasn’t started using it yet, can go nearly three times that clip. Sort of a Lance Armstrong kind of pace. Here’s a link to the bike, known as PhysioRed.
The bike apparently uses “recycled spinning” to burn 10 times the calories of a regular bike by using biometrics to correctly position muscles etc. while pedaling. It also has infrarfed light that does all sorts of tissue repair and stuff.
This sounds like an infomercial, but let me tell you, if this calorie-burning thing is accurate, guys like Griffey would have all their problems solved. They could work out three times a week, eat a Slim Fast once in a while and lose all the weight they need while still hitting the golf course for hours on end.
Sounds like his perfect retirement gift.
Problem is, it costs $21,000 (according to Griffey). You get an HD TV on the bike with that, apparently, but still, I could go buy a Harley for that money, throw in a giant flatscreen and still have pocket change for a low carb chef while burning my regular 450 calories every half-hour.
Ah, to be rich and famous.
Griffey arrives at Mariners spring training
Sporting a bucket hat with sunglasses, Ken Griffey Jr. arrived at the Mariners’ spring training complex Friday with the kind of reception reserved for a veteran and clubhouse leader.
Griffey embraced manager Don Wakamatsu and general manager Jack Zduriencik, and bellowed greetings to teammates from across the clubhouse.
Slated to be the Mariners’ designated hitter, Griffey flew overnight from Florida after watching his daughter’s basketball game. He took his physical Friday after proclaiming that he’d lost seven pounds through dieting and exercise.
Griffey talked to most everyone in sight, even fans. He held court outside the complex with a group of fans following his physical.
“Good to see him,” Wakamatsu said. “It got real loud in there. It’s amazing how one guy can change the karma of the room.”
Other Mariners position players arrived in camp Friday, including third baseman Chone Figgins and outfielders Franklin Gutierrez and Ryan Langerhans.
Mike Sweeney, another team leader from last season, is expected Sunday after signing a minor-league deal last week.
“When you get Griff in here, it kind of puts pressure on everyone else,” Wakamatsu said. “I just called (Sweeney). I said ‘Griff’s here, where you at?’ He said, ‘I got a late invitation. It wasn’t my fault.’”

Cliff Lee, who is coming off foot surgery, is scheduled to take part in pitchers’ fielding practice as early as Saturday. It will be his first baseball drill of spring training, with a bullpen session slated for Wednesday.
“I feel good now. I feel like I could do it now,” Lee said. “But it’s kind of ‘Take it easy, better safe than sorry’ type of stuff at this point. Foot feels fine. It’s a little sore from time to time but it’s nothing that’s major at all.”
In other news, Erik Bedard played catch for about 12 minutes Friday as he rehabs his surgically repaired left shoulder.
Catcher Rob Johnson, who had offseason hip and wrist surgery, caught a bullpen session Friday morning, took batting practice and ran without any noticeable hitch in this stride in conditioning drills.
“He wanted to catch more than one guy and we kind of had to hold him back a little bit,” Wakamatsu said.
Brewers’ Trevor Hoffman dilemma mirrors Griffey’s in Seattle
“It’s up to Trevor Hoffman now.
Hoffman has to go into manager Ken Macha’s office Wednesday and tell him to remove the 42-year-old right-hander from his role as the Milwaukee Brewers’ closer. The results demand it.
Otherwise, the pressure will be squarely on Macha to pull the plug on a future Hall of Famer closer or risk more ugly days such as Tuesday.”
Sound familiar? “The Disciples of Uecker,” a Brewers website in the mold of “USS Mariner” and “Lookout Landing,” weighed in with a post on Hoffman’s deficiencies as a pitcher and concluded, “Trevor Hoffman is no longer an asset to the Milwaukee Brewers, and the team would be best served by his retirement.
Subsitute the name Ken Griffey Jr. for Trevor Hoffman, and you have the same agonzing debate going on here about when it’s time for a Hall of Fame-caliber player to hang up his cleats. One is the active home run leader with 630 (fifth all-time), while the other is the career leader in saves with 596.
There are a couple of basic difference in the two situations, the first and most important being that fans in Milwaukee don’t have nearly the emotional investment in Hoffman as Mariners’ fans do in Griffey. Hoffman made his mark in San Diego with the Padres, but left after the 2008 season and signed with the Brewers. Griffey, of course, is the most celebrated, and probably most beloved (in close competitition with Edgar Martinez), player in Seattle franchise history.
However, the Brewers’ financial investment in Hoffman is much higher. Last year, at age 41, Hoffman was sensational for the Brewers — 46 saves in 50 opportunities, a 1.83 ERA, .183 opponents batting average). The Brewers re-signed him to a $7.5 million contract for 2010 with a mutual option for 2011 at $7 million that includes a $500,000 buyout. So they’re into him for $8 million, compared to the $2.35 million plus incentives the M’s are paying Griffey in 2012.

How bad has Hoffman been this season? He has blown five of his 10 save opportunities, most spectacularly on Tuesday, when he gave up three runs in the ninth to the Reds, failing to get a single out after inheriting a 4-2 lead. In 14 appearances, he’s allowed 21 hits plus seven walks over 13 innings, striking out just eight. His ERA is 13.15. Haudricourt writes, “Now, everybody is wondering if he has suddenly reached the end of the line with no prior warning.”
Macha’s decision after Tuesday’s debacle was to give Hoffman two days away from game action to work with pitching coach Rick Peterson. As this story explains, Peterson will try to cure some mechanical flaws the Brewers picked up from the “pitch f/x” scouting tool. Macha hasn’t said whether Hoffman will be back as the closer tonight when the Brewers face the Twins in interleague play. Carlos Villanueva handled the closing duties on Thursday and had a smooth 1-2-3 ninth to preserve a 4-3 win over the Pirates. That victory snapped a nine-game losing streak for the Brewers, whose 16-25 record is as disappointing to their fans as the Mariners’ 15-26 mark is to theirs.
My hunch is that Villanueva will remain as closer and Macha will let Hoffman try to revive himself in a setup role that’s less stressful — and less vital to the team’s success. That mirrors what the Mariners figure to keep doing with Griffey, who had his best moment of the season yesterday when he came off the bench in the ninth to beat the Blue Jays with a pinch-hit single.
I haven’t seen any indication that Griffey, despite his struggles, is going to walk away, and I’m still not sure the Mariners have the stomach to push him out. So, as with Hoffman in Milwaukee, the Mariners will keep searching for the best role to utilize him, for as long as he stays around. I think Thursday provided the optimal blueprint for a Mariner future that includes Griffey.

One very lucky Ten-year-old , Imogen Taylor, from Narrogin Little Athletics Centre in Western Australia, is off to watch the IAAF World Championships, after winning a competition conducted by Little Athletics Australia sponsors ASICS and The Athlete’s Foot.
Imogen entered the competition after buying a pair of ASICS’ GEL-Stormgirl shoes at The Athlete’s Foot store in Booragoon. Charles Barkley was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol early Wednesday.
An officer with a task force that targets drunken driving saw the former NBA star run a stop sign about 1:30 a.m., Gilbert police Lt. Eric Shuhandler said. Barkley was in Scottsdale’s Old Town area, a trendy spot in the Phoenix area.

Safeco Field still a gem after first decade
By its 10th birthday, the Kingdome had already been declared an eyesore, deemed obsolete, and scorned as a financial albatross for one of its two prime tenants, the Mariners.
By contrast, as Safeco Field nears its 10th birthday — which arrives on Wednesday with the Mariners in the midst of their All-Star break — it still has the full bloom of youth.griffeys for kids
To listen to the Mariners talk, in fact, Safeco is just in its infancy. Though the ballpark’s very existence, after the long, protracted political battle to get it built, is credited with keeping the franchise in Seattle, they perceive their new home will have more staying power than three Jamie Moyers.
“We look at what Wrigley Field is in Chicago, what Fenway means in Boston. We can see this being a 100-year facility,” said Bart Waldman, the Mariners’ executive vice president of legal and governmental affairs. “That’s how we treat it. We hope to get to that iconic status.”griffeys 2012
That’s a realistic goal, says Joan Enticknap, president of HomeStreet Bank and one of the driving forces behind Safeco as the original Public Facilities District chair. She remains a PFD board member — and a Mariners season-ticket holder.
“Look at Smith Tower, and all the other buildings that were built very well to start out,” said Enticknap. “They stood the test of time. The whole throwaway era was unconscionable. I’m permanently obsessed with this concept: I want the park to last 100 years. We do a lot of work to ensure we never have another Kingdome.”

“We couldn’t figure out anything that made economic sense for baseball,” said Waldman.
It was at that point then-governor Gary Locke convened a task force that concluded the Mariners’ long-term survival depended on building a new ballpark.
To get from that theoretical declaration to the sparkling $517 million facility with the newfangled retractable roof, an edifice that has been attended by more than 30 million baseball fans (and 54,097 wrestling fans for WrestleMania XIX) was hardly a day at the park.air griffey max 2
In fact, as the headaches mounted, in the form of intense political opposition, numerous lawsuits trying to stop the project dead in its tracks, and the highly controversial $100 million cost overruns that everyone wanted someone else to pay, it was easy to despair that the stadium would never get built.
But get built it did, in record time, because, as Ken Johnsen, the former executive director of the PFD, in essence the landlords of Safeco Field, said bluntly, “This was too important to just say, ‘Never mind, we’re not going to do it.’ ”
And now, 10 years down the road, it’s the perfect time for some reflection on the evolution, and revolution, of Safeco Field.women ken griffey shoes
First of all, by all accounts, it has succeeded in its primary function, which was to save the Mariners for Seattle. They have gone from one of the most financially unstable teams in the majors to one that annually ranks in the top 10 in payroll, and now has the second-longest continuous ownership group in the American League.
“There wouldn’t be any Seattle Mariners without Safeco Field,” said team president Chuck Armstrong. “It has fulfilled all our expectations and projections — exceeded those. It has provided the financial stability we needed.”

The Mariners’ ownership contributed $45 million initially to the project and then coughed up, reluctantly, about $98 million more to cover the cost overruns.
The bonds used to design and build Safeco Field are on pace to be retired early — seven years ahead of schedule for the $26 million used to build the parking garage (they are expected to be paid off this year), and four years early (in 2012) for the $310 million in ballpark bonds.
And Armstrong notes that once the Mariners’ ownership group recoups its operating losses, a profit-sharing system goes into place in which 10 percent of subsequent earnings will go back to the public via the PFD.griffeys for women
On an aesthetic level, there are still critics who bemoan the fact it wasn’t built in the North Lot of the Kingdome, or who maintain that the retractable roof was unnecessary.

A decade later, he hasn’t changed his advocacy for the North Kingdome location (“it’s in the wrong place,” he says of Safeco) nor his disdain for the roof, which he calls a “real wet blanket … a beast. It’s like a foreign object.”
Yet the ambience, atmosphere, architecture, sightlines and sensibilities — the whole ballpark experience — is widely considered to be one of the best in baseball in survey after survey.

“Everyone loves it,” said Texas reliever Eddie Guardado, who spent two-plus seasons with the Mariners. “I’d say it ranks in most players’ top three, and a lot of top ones. It’s a beautiful park.”
The Mariners were adamant from the beginning they needed a roof to ensure their large contingent of out-of-town fans that their trip would not be for naught. And the roof, designed with the concept of being an umbrella over the stadium — a carport rather than a garage was the common explanation — actually came in on budget at $67 million after being reduced from five to three sections.
“It was an amazing feat to get that done, and to do it in a way that doesn’t just work well technically, but works well from a fan enjoyment standpoint,” said Johnsen. “When you’re in the park and the roof is closed, you still feel like you’re outside. That amazed me.”
Other attributes of Safeco are the dazzling view from various locales, and the way the park fosters mobility — fans can watch from various vantage points in the ballpark and not miss action while in the concourses.king griffeys
“I often get up around the fifth or sixth inning, walk around the whole place on the 100 level all the way around, and just sort of purr, looking at all those happy people looking down on that field of dreams,” said former University of Washington president William Gerberding, one of the original members of the PFD board. “Seattle got lucky with that park.”
Branch Rickey once said famously that luck is the residue of design. The Seattle-based architectural firm NBBJ was given the task of designing Safeco Field, though in the meeting to choose the architect, the Mariners cast the lone vote for HOK, the Kansas City powerhouse that had masterminded the highly praised Camden Yards.
“I think the M’s finally came around,” says Dennis Forsyth, the NBBJ architect who had the daunting position of project manager. “We weren’t their choice, and we were always walking up hill. But they’re proud of the field. Whenever I run into Chuck, I think he’s happy.”

Said Forsyth: “I think the PFD board had the same desire, and the Mariners had the same desire. That was the mission we were on — to make it fit into Pioneer Square and make it feel like it belonged in Seattle.”
And to do it on an accelerated timetable that the Mariners deemed essential. The original goal was to have the ballpark ready for opening day in 1999, but that was reluctantly moved back to midseason. Still, of the five ballparks that were being built at the time — San Francisco, Houston, Milwaukee and Detroit, as well as Seattle — it was on the fastest track.
“Remember, we were losing, just pure cash losses, $20 million every year,” said Waldman. “So every year’s delay was another $20 million of loss. Beyond that, this thing had a certain momentum to it. You always worry, on the political side, about losing that momentum.”kids ken griffey shoes
So it was a wild race against time that accentuated the stress that was already swirling. More than 3,250 workers representing about 29 construction trades built Safeco in a joint venture of Huber, Hunt and Nichols and Kiewit Construction. Skilling Ward Magnusson Barkshire designed and engineered the roof.
“We needed to build it as fast as any ballpark that size — faster,” said the PFD’s Johnsen. “I think in a lot of ways that drove the tension over the course of the project on a number of fronts. There was not a lot of time to say, ‘Let’s sit back and think about this.’ ”
“It was a crazy atmosphere,” added Forsyth. “We had to really make every decision count. People were out there trying to stop it. It was just strange. We all put our heads down and got it done.”kids griffey shoes
And they did so in a way that even some of its fiercest critics have grudgingly admitted is an artistic success. Chris Van Dyk, head of the watchdog group, “Citizens for More Important Things,” which filed a lawsuit claiming the ballpark bonds were illegal that went all the way to the state Supreme Court before being shot down, remains disdainful of the public expenditure.
“We opposed it because we felt professional baseball had plenty of its own money to build its own bloody stadium, and the Kingdome was only 20 years old,” he said. “Neither factor has changed.
“What they used to justify the wisdom of using a half-billion dollars which was desperately needed for other stuff was the economic development in the immediate area. The only economic development you see in the area is a strip club that they’ve been fighting.”
Yet Van Dyk is a Mariners follower, and he acknowledged that he has recently taken in a game at Safeco Field. His evaluation?griffey shoes
“It’s an incredible facility,” he said. “Gosh, the fans love it.”
On that one point alone, perhaps, he and the Mariners are in sync. Armstrong has noted that several times a week, he’ll find himself admiring the place and reflecting on the arduous journey that got the team there.
“I tell people I have four children, three of whom are human,” he said.
“Safeco Field is my fourth child. She’s beautiful.”
Larry Brown is introduced as Southern Methodist coach | College basketball
Larry Brown has returned to college coaching.
The 71-year-old Hall of Famer was formally introduced as Southern Methodist’s coach Monday in Dallas. SMU has not won an NCAA tournament game since 1988 — the same year Brown won a national title at Kansas in his most recent season as a college coach.
Brown, known for sometimes messy departures from jobs, brushed off questions about how long he would stay at SMU, saying he thought the Mustangs had the resources to compete in the Big East when they join that conference in 2013. He joked about his age.

Retired two-sport star Bo Jackson hopes to raise $1 million for tornado relief and increase awareness of lingering damage across Alabama with a five-day, 300-mile bicycle ride through the state that begins Tuesday.
The 49-year-old Jackson, a former resident of Bessemer in Jefferson County, said he was on the West Coast when 62 twisters hit the state April 27, killing about 250 and leaving a path of destruction officials said was the equivalent of an area 1,000 miles long and 20 miles wide.
